Are you looking to enroll in a degree or certificate program at Frontier Community College? We would love to have you join us! Our Advisement department is here to help you every step of the way, from program and career exploration to graduation day and beyond.

Before enrolling in a degree or certificate program, students must first schedule an appointment with an academic advisor through FCC's Student Services office. Advisement is an essential step in college education to make informed and educated decisions. Advisors also ensure you are earning all necessary credits to apply towards your chosen degree or certificate program.

Eric Resor

Academic Advisor - Transfer & Pre-Nursing

Eric Resor has been advising students at FCC since 2012. Resor works specifically with students who are pursuing an Associate's Degree and plan to transfer to a 4-year university afterwards. Students who plan to join the Associate Degree in Nursing Program will also by advised by Resor while completing pre-requisite classes.

Resor will ensure that Transfer students are completing all necessary classes in order to graduate in a timely manner and continue their education afterwards. Have a major or area of study in mind? Resor will also help you gain early exposure through elective courses, which can give you a head start in your chosen field.

Kara Blanton

Academic Advisor - Career & Technical Education

Kara Blanton has been advising students at FCC since 2007. Blanton works with students who have chosen a Career & Technical Education (CTE) program on Frontier's campus. During their time in one of the CTE programs, students will be advised to ensure they are on track to completing the degree or certificate and prepared to enter the workforce.

Julie Bullard, Program Advisor

Nursing

Julie has been with IECC since 2006. She started at FCC working in the adult education building with the literacy program, then transferred roles in 2007 to become the Nursing Program Advisor on the FCC campus. She advises nursing students, evaluates placement test scores and advises students of impact on ranking and/or remediation options, in addition to administering pre-admission testing. She enjoys working with students and faculty to ensure the students’ success in the associate degree nursing program. Julie holds an Associate in Science degree from Frontier Community College and obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration through McKendree University in 2012.

Annie Lankford

TRIO Student Support Services Academic Counselor

Annie has been the Academic Counselor for TRIO SSS at FCC since 2014. Prior to this role, she was an Administrative Assistant in the Financial Aid Department at FCC for 2 years. Annie holds an Associate in Science Degree from Frontier Community College and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing from the University of Southern Indiana. Annie was in TRIO Student Support Services when she attended FCC as a student.

Regardless of which associate degree you choose to pursue, our transfer programs will equip you with general education requirements and successfully prepare you for a four-year institution. On our campus (and even before you officially begin classes), we know your name and your educational pursuits. Larger universities and colleges may see you as a file in their system. At Frontier, we strive to provide not only quality education but also personalized customer service. In our Student Services office, each of our departments is available to assist you at any time and answer all of your questions. Our academic advisors will help you plan each semester with your educational and career goals in mind. We love to see our students succeed while you’re on campus and even after you move forward to the next chapter in life.

At Frontier, the average class size is ten. This means you get to know each of your classmates and develop friendships on campus. With smaller class sizes, our instructors have the opportunity to know and care about each student. FCC faculty also provide one-on-one support to help you succeed and retain the subject knowledge. This personal interaction allows for not only better instruction and learning opportunities but also better communication as a whole between the instructor and student.

Who says you can’t work towards your major before you transfer? If you have a field of study in mind, you have the opportunity to add specialized classes and electives to your schedule. This allows you to begin working towards a college major while completing courses in the areas of mathematics, communications, and humanities.

Several of our elective classes provide students with job shadowing or projects and assignments that provide early exposure to career interests. Education-focused classes, for example, include teaching observation hours that would allow a student to see firsthand a teaching career and classroom environment.

As a transfer degree-seeking student at Frontier Community College, you will complete several general education courses led by qualified, knowledgeable faculty. Below are the full-time faculty members for our transfer program.

Nixie Hnetkovsky - Associate Professor of Life Science

Nixie Hnetkovsky has been an instructor at Frontier Community College since 2003. Before becoming a full-time instructor for FCC, Hnetkovsky was an adjunct instructor for ��챬��.

Hnetkovsky admits that she did not initially plan a career in teaching. However, once she began working as an adjunct instructor, she fell in love with the job and realized her passion for it. To this day, Hnetkovsky still enjoys teaching and discussing science as well as helping students realize their true potential.

To stay current on the best teaching practices and methods, specifically within the field of science, Hnetkovsky reads articles on the latest research and education methods. She also belongs to several professional organizations for science and education, and she utilizes this membership to gain new ideas and tools for the classroom and lab.

In addition to serving as an associate professor, Nixie Hnetkovsky also serves as the Head Coach for Frontier Community College’s volleyball team. Hnetkovsky holds both Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.

Linda Monge - Associate Professor of Mathematics

An instructor at FCC since 2009, Linda Monge brings a wealth of mathematics knowledge and teaching experience to the table. Before she was teaching college math, Monge was a teacher at both the high school and junior high level. In all, she has 47 years of teaching experience.

Monge always wanted to be a teacher, even at the young age of teaching her dolls after each day in school. As a lifelong learner, she still enjoys motivating even the most reluctant learner. “I have enjoyed seeing students with a negative attitude towards mathematics change and realize they can master this subject,” Monge says. “They start to enjoy success in a subject with which they had previously struggled, and you can see the confidence instilled in the student.”

To prepare students for the next step in their educational goals, Monge models her coursework after university classes. The content taught at FCC is the same content students would find at a 4-year university. Through in-class instruction, discussion, and assignments, she ensures they are ready for the university level by the time they graduate.

On a typical day in one of Mrs. Monge’s math classes, students will pick up a folder upon arriving that contains graded work as well as lecture guides for the day. After questions and discussions about homework, Monge introduces new content. With small class sizes, she is able to work individually with students if they need extra help.

Monge stays current with the best practices and methods of mathematics instruction so students are prepared for the next level of education as well as the workforce. She is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and she is also an avid reader of education magazines and journals. When available, she attends conferences and seminars for instruction.

Linda Monge resides in Fairfield with her husband, Dee. They have three children and four grandchildren. She holds the following educational degrees:

Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education – University of Illinois
Master of Arts in Mathematics Education – Rockford College
Master of Arts in High School Administration – Eastern Illinois University

Mary Morris - Assistant Professor of English

Mary Morris has been an instructor for Frontier Community College since 2010. She teaches English and communications classes, including Composition, Composition & Analysis, and Fundamentals of Effective Speaking.

Prior to teaching at FCC, she spent three years at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale as an instructor while earning her Master’s Degree. While in the Carbondale area, Morris also worked as a proofreader and editor for Craig Williams Creative, Inc., as well as an editorial assistant and freelance reporter for the Southern Illinoisan newspaper.

After returning to Olney, Morris served as a reporter and copy editor for the Olney Daily Mail for five years. She still had a passion for teaching, though, so she reentered the education field as an adjunct instructor at ��챬��.

At Frontier Community College, Morris enjoys sharing her love for writing and reading with her students. “I like to share my enthusiasm and my knowledge with my students,” says Morris, “but I especially find satisfaction in knowing I’m helping prepare our students for success, not just in school but in life itself.”

In a typical day in the classroom, Morris encourages her students to discuss the current readings and issues at hand. She starts each day with an informal “question of the day” that every student has to answer, which provides experience with public speaking. In composition courses, students can expect to experience hands-on, in-class writing and small-group work for grammar practice and essay development.

Preparing students for the future, including coursework at the university level, is an essential goal for Morris. “All of my classes involve core skills that my students will need for the rest of their lives, including strong communication skills,” she says. Whether the assignments include essays, formal presentation, or debate, Morris ensures her students are prepared for success at a university and in any profession.

Will my classes transfer?

The answer is, almost always, yes. Our general education courses typically provide a seamless transfer to a four-year university or institution. Most of our students transfer to a university in Illinois or surrounding state and have no problems with the transfer process.

If you are planning to transfer, we encourage you to contact the college and inquire about transfer credits. They can provide a clear answer and any additional guidance that pertains specifically to that college or university.

Do I have to apply for admission?

Yes, and we have an easy application process. You can apply online by scrolling up towards the top menu and clicking the "Apply" button. There is no cost to apply.

How long will it take to earn my Associate's Degree?

Completing the transfer program and earning an Associate's Degree typically takes two years. Each degree within our transfer program (Associate in Arts, Associate in General Studies, Associate in Science, Associate in Science and Arts) is comprised of 64 credit hours.

If you have earned dual credit, or if you have taken or plan to take summer classes, you can earn a degree in less than two years. Students who attend FCC with dual credit or summer classes under their belt can complete the degree in as little as one year. You may also be able to take a lighter load of classes each semester.

Can I earn my degree online?

We do not offer a transfer degree that can be completed entirely online. However, we do offer several online courses that may be applied towards your Associate's Degree. Hybrid courses are also available, which provide a blend of face-to-face instruction with online learning.

Many of our students will take an online class in addition to face-to-face classes, or they will enroll in an online course for the summer to work towards the degree of their choosing.

Do you offer scholarships?

All students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to apply for financial aid. We also have a general scholarship application form that is available to incoming and current students. Each spring we accept completed applications, and the scholarships are awarded by the Frontier Community College Foundation. Over 35 scholarships are available annually to students.

Do I need a high school diploma to enroll at FCC?

You must have a high school diploma or GED equivalency to enroll in any program at Frontier Community College. You may apply online without providing a copy of your diploma, but you will need to submit required documents prior to registering for classes.

Can I take just one or two classes at a time?

You do not have to be a full-time student to earn an Associate's Degree! We offer our transfer classes in the day and evening to accommodate those who may work during the day or are currently enrolled in high school. Be sure to make an appointment with an academic advisor to ensure you register for the necessary classes to apply towards your degree.

What are the benefits of choosing a community college?

There's probably too many reasons to fit into this box! But we'll try to be thorough. Choosing a community college to begin your educational goals is a great choice both academically and financially. We offer some of the lowest tuition rates in the State of Illinois, so you can earn a transfer degree with savings to apply towards a Bachelor's Degree. You can also apply for financial aid or scholarships to help cover the cost of tuition and books. At FCC, we provide a textbook rental service, which is a cheaper alternative to purchasing textbooks each semester.

Small class sizes provide a major advantage in your academic endeavors. Our average class size is ten, allowing you better learning opportunities and interactions with instructors and fellow students. Instructors at FCC get to know each student by name and provide a personalized learning experience, as they truly care about student success.

Choosing a community college also allows you to earn general education requirements in the early stages of your educational goals, allowing you to focus on your field of study once you transfer. ABOUT THE DEGREE

Where is your future taking you? Start your engine and begin your journey to a growing job field with the two-year Automotive Technology program at Frontier Community College.

Students in this program will develop an in-depth knowledge of the industry and best practices through classroom instruction and hands-on training. As the automotive field continues to make technological advances, the program reflects those changes in the areas of diagnostics and repair.

The automotive lab is a spacious facility complete with the latest equipment and developments where students will receive extensive group and one-on-one training. Lab equipment includes a tire machine and balancer, computer diagnostic equipment, engine repair equipment, a Snap-on alignment machine, and an automotive lighting system trainer. The lab also contains special service tools for brake, steering, suspension, and transmission system diagnosis and repair. Several vehicles and engines are placed in the lab to provide real-world training.

QUALITY THROUGH ACCREDITATION

The Automotive Technology program at FCC is Master-certified in Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), which indicates the program’s commitment to meeting industry standards. The National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) organization examines the automotive industry and decides which skills are necessary for today’s technicians, then sets the required guidelines for automotive programs. Because the program is built around these required guidelines, students can be confident they will be adequately prepared for a career in the automotive field.

FCC’s Automotive Technology program has been Master ASE-accredited since 2009. To be Master-level certified, the program must be certified in all eight areas of ASE, which includes Engine Repair, Suspension and Steering, and Electrical Systems. This achievement not only speaks to the program’s alignment with the industry, but also sets the program at a higher level of standard among the Southern Illinois region.

INDUSTRY CERTIFICATIONS

Students in the program have the opportunity to earn several certifications prior to beginning their career as a technician.

In preparing to become an ASE-certified technician, students will take entry-level exams for each of the eight ASE categories. If a student meets the scoring requirement, FCC will pay for the student to take that exam again at the professional level. Each spring, the program will travel to Vincennes, Indiana, and sit for one professional exam. If a student passes the exam, he or she becomes ASE certified for that specific category. Once an individual passes all eight exams, they become an ASE-certified technician.

The FCC campus also serves as an NC3 certified training center that provides students with Snap-on Multimeter training and certifications. This is another certification that increases a graduate’s employability.

Each student in the program is also provided access to actual AC Delco training modules, which are presented to professional technicians by aftermarket General Motors trainers. When a student completes a module, they receive a certificate. This is just another way in which students can increase their employability when they begin their job search.

TRANSFER & EARN A BACHELOR'S DEGREE

Graduates of the degree program may also transfer into a 4-year Automotive program to earn a Bachelor’s Degree for even more career opportunities. Thanks to an articulation agreement with Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, graduates of the Automotive Technology program can seamlessly transfer into their 4-year program for Automotive Technology.

FACULTY

Rodney Maxey - Assistant Professor

Rodney Maxey is a Master Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)-certified instructor for the Automotive Technology program at Frontier Community College. He is also certified in L1 ASE (Advanced Engine Performance) and G1 ASE (Maintenance and Light Repair).

Maxey has been an automotive instructor since 1990 and continues to adapt to the latest improvements and developments in the field. His teaching career began at Moog Automotive (St. Louis, MO), where he taught professional technicians at its world-class training center. He then became the instructor for the automotive program at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.

In 2003, Maxey was hired to start the Automotive Technology program at Frontier Community College. Handed an empty building (Workforce Development Center) on campus, he was asked to create a successful program. In time, Maxey obtained the necessary equipment, acquired tools, and prepared the curriculum. Nearly two decades later, the program is Master ASE accredited and has been nationally recognized as the best automotive trade school by value (Trade School Future, 2019). “It was worth the challenge,” Maxey says when asked about his journey in developing the program.

Maxey holds three college degrees from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale:

Do I need my own tools for class?

No, and this is a major benefit for students joining the program. Tools will be available for students to use during their time in the program. However, it is suggested that students begin building a toolset so they are prepared for a job after graduating. FCC has a partnership with Snap-on, and students can purchase tools at a significant discount while enrolled in the program.

Do I have to buy my textbooks for class?

This is the only automotive program in Southern Illinois that does not require a student to purchase textbooks. At FCC, students rent their textbooks from the college bookstore for the duration of the class, providing significant savings.

Will I be ASE certified after I complete the program?

No. ASE certification is handled by an outside organization, as no automotive program can certify you. However, you will develop the skills and knowledge to pass the ASE tests so you can become a certified technician.

How much of this program is hands-on?

The instructor for this program says there is about a 40/60 mix of classroom instruction and lab training, respectively. Knowledge for this program is important, but hands-on experience is critical to preparing for the job.

Can I work on my car in class?

The program has several vehicles in the lab that are used for training, but the instructor also relies on outside vehicles for additional experience. If your vehicle requires service and provides the needed experience to students, it is welcome in the lab. The instructor will handle the arrangements.

Will the program knowledge be relevant to the industry?

The ASE accrediting members are always monitoring the industry and adapting accreditation guidelines to reflect those changes. Because FCC’s program is Master ASE certified, it must always implement these changes and ensure students are taught the latest improvements and training methods on the newest equipment.

Will I be able to find a job after graduating?

Our graduates have much success in the automotive industry. The industry has a shortage of qualified technicians, so a graduate with the right skills and knowledge will always be in-demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the 2019 median pay for automotive technicians was $42,000.

Careers

Students can find employment as an auto mechanic, automotive service technician, automotive shop foreman, and more. Jobs can be found in automotive dealerships, repair and maintenance shops, parts and supply stores, automotive rental and leasing companies, and in government. Entrepreneurial opportunities are also available, as some graduates have opened their own automotive repair business.
