Military Requests for Student Information

Under a federal law entitled the Solomon Amendment, military recruiters are allowed to access some address, biographical, and academic information on students age 17 and older. The Department of Education has determined the Solomon Amendment supersedes most elements of FERPA. An institution is therefore obligated to release data included in the list of "Student Recruiting Information," which may or may not match IECC's FERPA directory information. HOWEVER, if a student has a current Directory Information Restriction Notification (see FERPA) on file, IECC will not provide data on the studentÌýand, under the law,Ìýis released of any obligation to do so.ÌýÌýÌý

Student Recruiting Information as defined by the Solomon Amendment includes:

  1. Name
  2. Address
  3. Telephone Number
  4. Age/Date of Birth
  5. Place of Birth (N/A to IECC - this information is not collected from students)
  6. Class Level (freshman, sophomore, continuing)
  7. Major field of study
  8. Degrees received
  9. Most recent educational institution attended

Requesting Recruitment Information from IECC

Information released is limited to military recruiting purposes only.ÌýMilitary recruiters within the following 5Ìýbranches of the service may request student recruitment information once each semester.

Air Force:ÌýAir Force, Air Force Reserve, Air Force National Guard
Army:ÌýArmy, Army Reserve, Army National Guard
Coast Guard:ÌýCoast Guard, Coast Guard Reserve
Marine Corps:ÌýMarine Corps, Marine Corps Reserve
Navy:ÌýNavy, Navy Reserve

Military recruiters must:

  1. Complete a Military Request for Student Information form.

  2. Attach this completed form to an official request, on letterhead, that clearly identifies theÌýmilitary recruiting organization.Ìý

  3. Mail both documents, along with a $50 processing fee to:ÌýÌý

All responsesÌýto Solomon Amendment requests are processed centrally in a timely manner at the District Office. Data will be supplied in an Excel file andÌýinclude all applicable Student Recruitment Information identified above.
